Utility Bill Analyzer

Anatomy of a bill

A commercial electric bill is nine or ten lines, and most of the money hides in the ones nobody reads. This is one year of one office building’s bills, taken apart the way Utility Bill Analyzer reads them.

The building, the utility and the tariff are synthetic. Not a customer result.

On this bill

$13,069 a year, on three lines

What the reader found

Three things on this bill worth a letter to the utility.

Each one lives on a line above. Point at a card to light that line in every month it touches.

  1. $3,640 a year

One hot afternoon is still on the bill

Every unit restarted together one August afternoon and set a 457 kW peak; the demand ratchet has billed at least 80% of it every month since, even though the building never came close again.

Found by comparing monthsOn the line Demand ratchet (billed above metered), 4 months

  2. $4,302 a year

A rider charged on every kilowatt-hour

The tariff says the capacity rider applies to the first 10,000 kWh each month; the bill applies it to all of them.

Found by a billing ruleOn the line Capacity rider, every month

  3. $5,128 a year

On a rate class it no longer qualifies for

Demand has stayed under 500 kW for more than a year, so the account qualifies for the under-500 kW class, which has no ratchet and a lower demand rate; the same load costs $5,128 a year less there.

Found by a rate checkOn the line Demand, every month

What it does

What Utility Bill Analyzer does

  • Reads every page of every bill, not the summary line: each meter, each charge, each rider, twelve months at a time.
  • Checks each charge against the tariff it should have been billed on: the rate, the block, the class, the effective date.
  • Watches the ratchet and the riders month by month, so a one-off peak or a misapplied rider shows up as a pattern rather than a number.
  • Flags what to dispute, what to change and what is simply the tariff, priced for the year, with an engineer standing behind each finding.

Rules do the checking; an engineer signs the letter. Invite-only today; the first building is free.
